Learning how to perform wudu (ablution) correctly is one of the first and most essential duties of every Muslim. Wudu is the beautiful act of purification that prepares the believer to stand before Allah Almighty in prayer — washing away not only physical impurities but also sins, as the blessed Sunnah explains. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the exact method of wudu in detail, and his noble Companions, such as Hazrat Uthman رضی اللہ عنہ, demonstrated it to the Muslim Ummah exactly as they had seen him perform it. In this article, we present the complete, step-by-step method of wudu in the light of the Holy Quran and authentic Hadith, according to the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah — along with its Sunnahs, virtues, the acts that break it, and the common mistakes to avoid.

The Command of Wudu in the Holy Quran
Wudu is not a custom of men — it is a direct command of Allah Almighty revealed in the Holy Quran. Allah Almighty says: “O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6). This single blessed verse contains the entire foundation of wudu: the face, the arms up to the elbows, the wiping of the head, and the feet up to the ankles — the four obligatory parts upon which the scholars of Islam agree.
Allah Almighty loves those who purify themselves. He declares in the Holy Quran: “Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222). Every wudu, then, is more than a preparation for prayer — it is an act by which the believer draws closer to the love of Allah Almighty. The one who performs wudu carefully and attentively earns the love of his Lord even before a single rak’ah of prayer is offered.
Why Wudu Is the Key to Prayer
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The key to prayer is purification” (Sunan Abi Dawud 61). Just as a door cannot be opened without its key, prayer cannot be accepted without wudu. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone who does hadath (passes wind/urine) until he performs ablution” (Sahih al-Bukhari 135). This is a severe and clear warning: any prayer offered without wudu is not accepted, no matter how beautifully it is performed.
The rank of purity in Islam is so high that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Purity is half of faith” (Sahih Muslim 223). Wudu is therefore not a burden — it is a privilege. It is the means by which the Muslim meets his Lord five times a day in a state of outward and inward cleanliness, honoured and prepared. For those learning the prayer itself, see our guide on what to say in prayer in Islam, and for the prayer of dawn, read about the virtues of Fajr prayer.
Step-by-Step Method of Wudu
The most authentic and detailed description of the Prophet’s ﷺ wudu was demonstrated by his son-in-law and third rightly-guided Caliph, Hazrat Uthman ibn Affan Humran, his freed slave, narrated that Uthman رضی اللہ عنہ called for water, performed wudu exactly as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed it, washing each part three times, and then said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ablution like this ablution of mine” (Sahih al-Bukhari 159). Here is the correct wudu method, step by step:
Step 1: Make the Intention (Niyyah)
Begin with a sincere intention in your heart that you are performing wudu to purify yourself for the worship of Allah Almighty. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud; it is an act of the heart. Without intention, the washing is merely cleaning the limbs — with intention, it becomes worship.
Step 2: Say Bismillah and Wash the Hands
Say Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) and wash both hands up to the wrists three times. Washing the hands first is an established Sunnah, and it ensures that the water you use for the rest of wudu is taken with clean hands.
Step 3: Rinse the Mouth
Take water in your right hand and rinse the mouth thoroughly three times. Swirl the water around the mouth so that it reaches every part of it. This is the madmadah of the Sunnah — a purification of the tongue, the organ with which we recite the Quran and make dhikr of Allah Almighty.
Step 4: Rinse the Nose
Sniff water into the nostrils with the right hand and blow it out with the left hand, three times. This is the istinsjaq of the Sunnah. The nose, through which we breathe the air Allah Almighty gave us, is cleaned as a sign that every blessing is acknowledged through purity.
Step 5: Wash the Face
Wash the entire face three times — from the hairline of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, and from one earlobe to the other. The face is washed completely, for it is the part of the body that will be turned toward the Qiblah and that will be humbled in prostration before Allah Almighty.
Step 6: Wash the Arms up to the Elbows
Wash the right arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow three times, then the left arm three times in the same way. Beginning with the right side is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in all matters of honour and purity. Make sure water reaches every part of the arm, including between the fingers — and remember to remove anything that would prevent water from reaching the skin, such as tight rings or waterproof paint.
Step 7: Wipe the Head (Masah)
With wet hands, wipe over the head once — this is the masah commanded in the verse of wudu (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6). Pass the wet palms from the front of the head to the back and then return them to the front. The masah is performed once, not three times, according to the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Step 8: Wash the Ears
With the same wetness of the hands, wipe the outer and inner parts of both ears with the index fingers and thumbs. The ears, which hear the recitation of the Quran and the call to prayer, are purified as part of the complete wudu.
Step 9: Wash the Feet up to the Ankles
Finally, wash the right foot up to and including the ankle three times, then the left foot three times. Wash between the toes, and take care that no part of the foot remains dry. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave a stern warning about this: “Woe to the heels from the Fire!” (Sahih al-Bukhari 163) — he said this when he saw that some people’s heels were not properly washed. For this reason, many Muslims wash between their toes with the little finger of the left hand to be certain.
Sunnahs and Etiquettes of Wudu
Beyond the obligatory parts, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ adds beauty and reward to wudu. Among the established Sunnahs and etiquettes are: beginning with Bismillah, washing each part three times (except the head, which is wiped once), starting with the right side, washing the parts in the correct order without long gaps, using the miswak before wudu, and not wasting water — even if one is performing wudu at the bank of a flowing river, as the scholars teach. It is also recommended to face the Qiblah while performing wudu when possible, and to make dua during and after it. For those who have performed a full bath and wonder about its ruling, see our article: does ghusl count as wudu.
What Breaks Wudu
Wudu remains valid until something breaks it. The well-known matters that break wudu, agreed upon by the scholars, are: any natural discharge from the private parts (urine, stool, or wind), the flow of blood or pus from the body, deep sleep in which one loses awareness, loss of consciousness, and vomiting a mouthful. Doubt does not break wudu — the one who is certain he had wudu but doubts whether it broke should act on certainty, for certainty is not removed by doubt. When in doubt, simply renewing the wudu brings peace of heart.
Virtues of Wudu
The virtues of wudu are immense, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described them in many blessed narrations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever performs ablution like this ablution of mine and then offers two rak’ahs of prayer without being distracted, his previous sins are forgiven” (Sahih Muslim 226). With every drop of wudu water, sins fall away — and with two rak’ahs offered in its freshness, the believer’s record is cleansed.
One of the most beloved practices of the noble Companions was renewing wudu frequently. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked Hazrat Bilal رضی اللہ عنہ: “O Bilal, tell me of the most hopeful deed you have done in Islam, for I heard the sound of your footsteps ahead of me in Paradise.” Bilal رضی اللہ عنہ replied that he never performed ablution at any time of night or day except that he prayed with that ablution whatever was written for him to pray (Sahih al-Bukhari 1149). This is why the righteous renew their wudu again and again throughout the day and night.
After completing wudu, the believer should recite the blessed dua: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that whoever says this after wudu, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes (Sahih Muslim 234).
Finally, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught: “When you go to your bed, perform the ablution as for prayer” (Sahih al-Bukhari 247). Sleeping in the state of wudu brings the mercy and protection of Allah Almighty upon the sleeper through the night. To learn the prayer and its duas in full, consider joining our Namaz and Masnoon Duas course.
Common Mistakes in Wudu
Many people perform wudu hastily and fall into mistakes that can invalidate this great act of worship. The most common mistakes are:
- Rushing through the steps: Wudu performed in a hurry often leaves parts unwashed. Take your time — wudu is worship, not a race.
- Leaving dry spots, especially on the heels: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned, “Woe to the heels from the Fire!” (Sahih al-Bukhari 163), when he saw dry heels. Check the heels, the ankles, between the toes, and the elbows carefully.
- Not washing between the fingers and toes: Water must reach every part of the limb. Rubbing the limbs while washing (takhleel) is the Sunnah way.
- Waterproof barriers on the skin: Nail polish, waterproof paint, or thick grease that prevents water from touching the skin must be removed before wudu.
- Wiping the neck as if it were obligatory: The masah is of the head and ears; adding the neck is not part of the Prophet’s ﷺ wudu.
- Wasting water: Using excessive amounts of water contradicts the Sunnah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed complete wudu with a small amount of water.
Correcting these mistakes transforms wudu from a habit into a source of light. Every careful wudu is a step closer to the accepted prayer — and the accepted prayer is the key to Paradise.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct order of wudu steps?
The correct order of wudu steps, as demonstrated by Hazrat Uthman رضی اللہ عنہ from the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 159), is: intention, Bismillah, washing the hands, rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows (right then left), wiping the head, washing the ears, and washing the feet to the ankles (right then left). Each part is washed three times, except the head which is wiped once.
Can I pray without wudu?
No. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone who does hadath until he performs ablution” (Sahih al-Bukhari 135). Wudu is the key to prayer (Sunan Abi Dawud 61) — without it, prayer is not accepted.
What dua should I read after wudu?
After wudu, recite: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.” The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that whoever says this after wudu, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him (Sahih Muslim 234).
Does sleeping break wudu?
Deep sleep in which one loses awareness breaks wudu. A light doze while sitting does not, according to the scholars, but when in doubt it is best to renew wudu. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught to perform wudu before sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari 247).
Can I read the Quran on my phone without wudu?
This is a common question in the digital age. Touching the physical mushaf (printed Quran) requires wudu, but reading from a phone screen is a separate matter — see our detailed answer in the article on reading the Quran without wudu on the phone.
