The rights of parents in Islam hold a rank second only to the rights of Allah Almighty Himself. In the Holy Quran, the command to worship Allah alone is mentioned again and again side by side with the command to be kind to parents. This pairing is no accident: after the Creator who gave us life, no one has done more for us than our mother and father. In this complete guide, we explore what Islam teaches about respecting, obeying and honouring parents, the great rewards promised for serving them, the warnings against disobeying them, and practical ways to fulfil their rights in every stage of life — all in the light of the Quran and the Sunnah, according to the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah.

Parents in the Holy Quran
Allah Almighty says: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them [so much as] ‘uff’, and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say: ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'” (Surah Al-Isra 17:23-24) These two verses contain the whole teaching in miniature: worship belongs to Allah alone, kindness to parents comes immediately after, even the smallest word of irritation — “uff” — is forbidden, and the child is taught to pray for his parents with the same tenderness with which they raised him.
Allah Almighty also says: “And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” (Surah Luqman 31:14) Gratitude to Allah and gratitude to parents are joined together, because the parents were the means through which Allah’s blessing of life and upbringing reached us. The same command is repeated in another place: “We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents.” (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:8) And Allah Almighty commands good treatment to parents alongside good treatment to relatives, orphans and neighbours: “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:36)
Notice the order in every verse. The rights of parents in Islam are not a cultural custom or a matter of personal feeling; they are a divine command, placed next to Tawhid itself. A person who prays, fasts and gives charity, yet breaks his parents’ hearts, has missed one of the greatest doors to Paradise. That is why the believer who seeks closeness to Allah should begin by looking at how he treats his mother and father at home — just as he begins his day with the virtues of Fajr prayer and keeps his heart alive with the power of dua in Islam, so too his worship is completed by kindness to his parents.
Why the Mother Is Mentioned Three Times
A man once came to the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and asked: “Who is most deserving of my good companionship?” The Holy Prophet ﷺ replied: “Your mother.” The man asked: “Then who?” He ﷺ replied: “Your mother.” The man asked again: “Then who?” He ﷺ replied: “Your mother.” The man asked a fourth time: “Then who?” He ﷺ replied: “Then your father.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971; Sahih Muslim 2548) This famous Hadith is the foundation of the special honour Islam gives to mothers, and it reflects the Quran’s own words about the mother who carried her child “in weakness upon weakness” (Surah Luqman 31:14).
The mother carries the child for nine months, endures the pain of childbirth, nurses him for two years, and spends sleepless nights over his health and comfort. The father too sacrifices enormously — earning, protecting, guiding and providing — and his right is immense. But the mother’s sacrifices, hidden and continuous, are why her name comes three times before the father’s. It is also narrated that Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers (Sunan an-Nasa’i 3104) — meaning that serving one’s mother with humility and love is a direct path to Paradise. The scholars explain this as a powerful image: just as a child once lay at his mother’s feet in dependence, so the grown child finds Paradise by lowering himself in service to her.
This honour does not diminish the father. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the father is the middle door of Paradise: honouring him opens it, and neglecting him closes it. Both parents together are a treasure. The child who has both alive holds two doors of Paradise open in his own home; the child who has lost one should cling all the more tightly to the other, and to the prayers and good deeds that benefit the departed.
What Are the Rights of Parents?
1. Respect in Speech and Manner
The first right of parents is respectful speech. Allah Almighty forbids even “uff” — the smallest sigh of annoyance — and commands “a noble word” (Surah Al-Isra 17:23). This means speaking softly, never shouting, never arguing rudely, never mocking their old-fashioned ways, and never making them feel like a burden. A believer’s tone with his parents should be the gentlest tone he uses with anyone in the world. If we guard our tongues in patience (Sabr) in difficult times with strangers, how much more should we guard them with the two people who gave us everything?
2. Obedience in What Is Good
The child owes his parents obedience in all matters that are lawful and good: their instructions about study, work, marriage, household matters and daily conduct should be followed with a willing heart, not with resentment. Obedience is not slavery; it is gratitude in action. The parents’ experience, prayers and love for their child make their guidance a protection, even when the young person cannot yet see its wisdom. The limits of this obedience are explained below.
3. Service and Financial Support
When parents grow old or fall into need, their children must support them financially and serve them physically — cooking, cleaning, accompanying them to the doctor, managing their affairs, and simply being present. This is not charity; it is the repayment of a debt that can never truly be repaid. A person who earns a halal livelihood and spends part of it on his parents earns a double reward: the reward of earning lawfully and the reward of honouring his parents. For beautiful supplications to make for parents, see our Islamic duas collection.
4. Keeping Ties and Honouring Their Loved Ones
Part of honouring parents is honouring the people they love: their relatives, friends and neighbours. Visiting the relatives of one’s father and mother, keeping family ties strong, and treating their friends with respect are all forms of birr al-walidayn (kindness to parents) that the scholars praise highly.
5. Dua for Parents — in Life and After Death
The Quran itself teaches the child the dua for his parents: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:24) This dua should be part of every believer’s daily prayers, after every Salah, and especially in the blessed night prayer — the importance of Tahajjud prayer is nowhere clearer than when a child weeps for his parents in the last third of the night. Dua for parents continues even after their death, as explained below.
Obedience to Parents — and Its Limits
Obedience to parents is obligatory, but it has one clear limit: there is no obedience to any created being in disobedience to the Creator. Allah Almighty says: “But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness.” (Surah Luqman 31:15) Even in that extreme case — where parents ask the child to commit shirk — the verse still commands kind companionship in worldly matters. The child refuses the sin, but never refuses respect.
The same principle applies to lesser matters. If parents ask for something forbidden — for example, to abandon prayer, to earn through interest, to cut family ties unjustly, or to wrong another person — the child must decline gently, explain with respect, and continue to serve them in every lawful way. Likewise, if parents ask for something merely disliked but lawful, wisdom and patience are needed: the child should try to persuade them kindly, seek the advice of scholars and elders, and remember that the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah have always taught that the parents’ pleasure is a means of Allah’s pleasure. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parent, and the displeasure of the Lord lies in the displeasure of the parent.” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1899) This Hadith should make every believer tremble before he dismisses his parents’ wishes lightly.
Serving Parents in Old Age
The Quran mentions old age specifically: “Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them [so much as] ‘uff’.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:23) Old age reverses the roles of life: the strong parent who once carried the child now needs to be carried, the parent who once fed the child now needs to be fed, and the parent who once answered every question now repeats the same question many times. This is the great test of birr al-walidayn, and also its greatest reward.
Serving aged parents means patience with their slowness, tolerance of their repetition, gentleness with their forgetfulness, and gratitude for their presence even when care becomes demanding. It means not sending them away to be cared for by strangers while the child lives in comfort, unless genuine necessity requires help — and even then, visiting often, calling daily, and keeping them at the centre of family life. It means remembering that the days with parents are numbered, and that every act of service now is a treasure stored for the Hereafter. The believer who combines this service with gratitude (Shukr) in Islam for the blessing of parents still alive will never regret a single hour spent at their side, while the one who neglects them will regret it for the rest of his life.
Practical care for aged parents also includes their health, dignity and spiritual life: arranging medical care, keeping their living space comfortable, helping them to pray and read Quran, and protecting them from loneliness. Children should also learn the Quran and its teachings themselves so they can teach and remind their parents lovingly — our online Quran courses are one way families study together, parents and children side by side.
Rights of Parents After Their Death
The rights of parents do not end with death. The scholars list several deeds that continue to benefit departed parents: praying for their forgiveness and mercy, giving charity on their behalf, performing Hajj or Umrah for them if able, fulfilling their debts and bequests, keeping ties with their relatives, and honouring their friends. The child should make dua for them constantly — “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small” (Surah Al-Isra 17:24) — and should make the Quran, charity and good deeds a regular gift to their souls. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for him. A righteous child is therefore the greatest legacy a parent can leave, and the greatest gift a child can give back.
Children should also avoid innovations and customs that have no basis in the Shariah when remembering their parents, and should instead follow the Sunnah: sincere dua, charity, and good character. The best way to honour departed parents is to live the life they prayed for — a life of prayer, honesty and kindness. The believer who lives by honesty in Islam and keeps the etiquette of supplication taught in our guide on etiquette of making dua carries his parents’ legacy forward in the noblest way.
The Grave Warning Against Disobedience
Just as kindness to parents opens Paradise, disobedience to parents (‘uquq al-walidayn) is counted among the major sins. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ listed it alongside associating partners with Allah and false testimony among the gravest of sins. The disobedient child faces punishment in this world as well as the next: his rizq is constricted, his duas are hindered, his own children may treat him as he treated his parents, and he risks dying without the parents’ pleasure — and the pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parent (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1899).
Common forms of disobedience are not only shouting or striking — Allah forbid — but also subtler forms: ignoring parents’ calls, preferring friends and spouses over them in every matter, making them feel unwanted, withholding money while living in luxury, and speaking about them harshly to others. The believer should examine himself honestly: if his parents were to describe him, would they describe a loving child or a distant one? If the answer is painful, the door of repentance is open today, while they are still alive to forgive. If they have passed away, repentance, dua and charity on their behalf remain open.
Practical Ways to Honour Your Parents Every Day
- Greet them warmly every day — with a smile, a salaam, and a question about their health and needs. Never walk past them without acknowledgment.
- Call them daily if you live apart — a short call means more to an old parent than any gift.
- Ask for their duas before any important step — a new job, a journey, an exam, a marriage. Their duas are among the most accepted duas in the heavens.
- Serve them before being asked — bring food, medicine, water and comfort without waiting for a request.
- Seek their advice and listen — even when you decide differently, listening honours them.
- Spend on them cheerfully — never make them feel they are a financial burden.
- Pray for them after every Salah — “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:24)
- Keep their family ties alive — visit their relatives, honour their friends, and keep the family united.
- Teach your own children to respect their grandparents — the respect you model today is the respect you will receive tomorrow.
- Never argue in front of others — disagreements with parents should be private, gentle and brief.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the greatest right of parents in Islam?
The greatest rights are respectful speech, obedience in lawful matters, service and financial support, and constant dua for them. Allah Almighty joins kindness to parents with worship of Him alone (Surah Al-Isra 17:23), and the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that Allah’s pleasure lies in the parent’s pleasure (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1899).
Who has more right — the mother or the father?
Both have immense rights, but the mother is mentioned three times before the father in the famous Hadith: “Your mother, your mother, your mother, then your father.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971) This reflects her unique sacrifices of pregnancy, childbirth and nursing (Surah Luqman 31:14).
Must I obey my parents if they ask me to do something forbidden?
No. There is no obedience in disobedience to Allah. The Quran commands that even then, the child must accompany his parents in this world with appropriate kindness (Surah Luqman 31:15) — refusing the sin gently while continuing to respect and serve them.
How can I benefit my parents after their death?
Through dua for their forgiveness, charity on their behalf, fulfilling their debts and bequests, keeping ties with their relatives, and living as a righteous child who prays for them. The Quran’s own dua is: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:24)
What if my parents are displeased with me — can I still earn their forgiveness?
Yes, while they are alive, go to them, apologise sincerely, serve them, and ask for their duas. Repentance and changed conduct are the best apology. If they have passed away, increase your dua, charity and good deeds on their behalf, and ask Allah Almighty for their forgiveness and mercy.
The rights of parents in Islam are a trust from Allah Almighty, a debt of gratitude that a lifetime of service cannot fully repay, and a door of Paradise standing open in our own homes. Honour your mother and father while you have them, speak to them with a noble word, serve them with humility, and pray for them night and day. The one whose parents are pleased with him has already won one of the greatest victories of this life — and, by Allah’s mercy, a share in the next. May Allah Almighty grant us all the blessing of being righteous, dutiful children, and may He have mercy on our parents as they brought us up when we were small. Ameen.
