What Is Surah Al-Mulk?
Surah Al-Mulk is the 67th chapter of the Holy Quran. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah, and it opens the 29th Juz of the Quran. Its name, Al-Mulk, means “The Sovereignty” or “The Dominion”, taken from its opening words: “Tabarakalladhi biyadihil mulk” — “Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion” (Al-Mulk 67:1). The surah has thirty verses, and its central theme is the absolute power and sovereignty of Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who created life and death to test His servants.
The surah calls the human heart to reflect on the creation of Allah — the seven heavens, the stars that adorn the lowest heaven, the alternation of night and day, and the provision that comes only from Him. It warns those who deny the truth, and it gives glad tidings to those who fear their Lord even though they cannot see Him. Because of its powerful message and its short length, Surah Al-Mulk is among the first surahs that children memorise, and it remains a nightly companion for believers throughout their lives. Those who wish to deepen their connection with the Quran may explore the Quran courses at Jamia Saeedia Darul Quran, where the recitation and understanding of the Holy Quran are taught with love and care.
The Intercession of Surah Al-Mulk
One of the greatest virtues of Surah Al-Mulk is that it will intercede for the one who recites it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “There is a surah in the Quran, thirty verses, which interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is Surah Tabarakalladhi biyadihil mulk.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2891). The same narration is also reported in Sunan Abi Dawud (Sunan Abi Dawud 1400), where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “A surah of the Quran containing thirty verses interceded for a man so that he was forgiven. It is the surah Tabarakalladhi biyadihil mulk.”
Think about the mercy in this narration. On the Day of Judgement, when every soul will be in need of intercession, a short surah of thirty verses will stand and plead for its companion until Allah forgives him. This is why the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah have always encouraged the believers to recite Surah Al-Mulk regularly and to teach it to their children. Just as the virtues of dhikr in Islam remind us that the remembrance of Allah brings peace to the heart, the recitation of Surah Al-Mulk brings the hope of forgiveness and the closeness of Allah. The believer who recites it with sincerity, understanding its meaning and acting upon its message, becomes a companion of the Quran, and the Quran will be a companion for him in this world, in the grave, and on the Day of Judgement.
Protection from the Punishment of the Grave
Another great virtue of Surah Al-Mulk is its protection from the punishment of the grave. The scholars have transmitted that Surah Al-Mulk is called “Al-Mani’ah” — the Protector — because it protects its reciter from the punishment of the grave. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the Ummah that the grave is the first stage of the Hereafter, and whoever is saved there will find ease in what follows. Reciting Surah Al-Mulk every night is therefore one of the most practical ways a believer can prepare for that stage.
This is also why the nightly recitation of this surah is linked with the importance of Tahajjud prayer: the night is the time when the believer is alone with his Lord, and the night is the time when the heart is most attentive. The one who ends his day with the words of Allah and the remembrance of the Hereafter sleeps with a heart at peace. The power of dua in Islam teaches us that sincere supplication is answered, and the believer should also make dua after reciting Surah Al-Mulk, asking Allah for protection from the punishment of the grave and for a good ending. The daily duas taught at Jamia Saeedia Darul Quran include the supplications of the night, which every believer should learn.
The Nightly Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself made Surah Al-Mulk a part of his nightly routine. It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would not sleep until he recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2892). This is a clear Sunnah for every Muslim: before going to sleep, recite these two surahs. The recitation takes only a few minutes, yet its reward is immense, and its protection covers the whole night.
For the believer, the night is not only a time of rest; it is a time of worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the last part of the night is blessed, and those who rise in it find closeness to Allah. Making Surah Al-Mulk a nightly habit is an easy first step toward a stronger night routine. Parents should teach this Sunnah to their children early, just as the article on Islamic upbringing of children explains: the habits formed in childhood remain for a lifetime. A child who grows up reciting Surah Al-Mulk before sleep will carry that light into adulthood, and the reward will continue for the parents who taught him.
Lessons from the Opening Verses
The opening verses of Surah Al-Mulk contain a complete lesson in faith. Allah says: “Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things. Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving.” (Al-Mulk 67:1-2). These two verses teach the believer three great truths. First, all power and sovereignty belong to Allah alone. Second, life and death are a test, and the measure of success is not wealth or fame but the quality of our deeds. Third, Allah is All-Mighty and Oft-Forgiving: He has the power to punish, yet His door of forgiveness is always open.
The believer who recites these verses nightly is reminded every day that his life has a purpose. He is not here by accident; he is here to be tested, and his deeds will decide his fate. This reflection builds patience (sabr) in difficult times, because the believer knows that hardship is part of the test, and it builds gratitude (shukr) in Islam, because he knows that every blessing is a gift from the One in Whose Hand is all dominion. The honesty in Islam that the Quran demands also flows from this understanding: the One Who sees all deeds will reward truthfulness and expose falsehood.
Surah Al-Mulk and the Fear of Allah
Further in the surah, Allah gives glad tidings to those who fear Him: “Verily, those who fear their Lord unseen, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward.” (Al-Mulk 67:12). The fear of Allah is not the fear of a tyrant; it is the awe of the believer who knows that Allah sees him even when no one else does, and who therefore avoids sin in private as well as in public. This is the essence of taqwa, and Surah Al-Mulk plants it deep in the heart.
The surah also asks a question that every person should ask himself: “Say: It is He Who has created you, and endowed you with hearing and seeing and hearts. Little thanks you give.” (Al-Mulk 67:23). Our hearing, our sight, our hearts — all are gifts from Allah, and the proper response is gratitude and obedience. The believer who reflects on this verse will guard his hearing from backbiting, his sight from what is forbidden, and his heart from arrogance. The kindness to neighbors in Islam and the rights of parents in Islam are part of the same obedience: the One Who gave us our senses commands us to use them in goodness toward others. Surah Al-Mulk ends with a reminder of dependence on Allah: “Say: He is the Most Gracious, in Him we have believed, and in Him we put our trust.” (Al-Mulk 67:29). This is the summary of the believer’s life — faith in Ar-Rahman and trust in Him alone.
How to Make Surah Al-Mulk Part of Your Night
Making Surah Al-Mulk a nightly habit is simple, and it takes only a few minutes. Here is a practical plan that any Muslim can follow, whether young or old.
1. Learn the Recitation Properly
Begin by learning to recite the surah with correct Tajweed. If you cannot read Arabic yet, listen to a reciter daily and repeat after him, or join a class. The Quran courses at Jamia Saeedia Darul Quran teach Nazra, Hifz and Tajweed step by step, and even a few minutes of daily practice will bring you to fluency.
2. Memorise It Gradually
Surah Al-Mulk has thirty short verses. Memorise two verses a day, and within two weeks you will know the whole surah by heart. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wished that this surah were in the heart of every believer, and memorising it is the way to fulfil that wish. Children memorise it easily, and families can memorise it together.
3. Recite It Every Night Before Sleeping
After the Isha prayer and your nightly supplications, sit for a few minutes and recite Surah Al-Mulk. Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who would not sleep until he had recited it. The virtues of Fajr prayer remind us that the day begins with prayer; in the same way, the night should end with the words of Allah. The how to perform wudu guide also reminds us that sleeping in a state of wudu is a Sunnah — combine wudu, Surah Al-Mulk, and dua, and your night becomes an act of worship.
4. Reflect on Its Meaning
Do not recite the surah like a routine. Read its translation, understand its verses, and let its warnings and promises touch your heart. The virtues of Surah Al-Kahf on Friday teach the same lesson: a surah recited with understanding brings light to the week, and Surah Al-Mulk recited with understanding brings light to the night and protection in the grave.
5. Teach It to Your Family
Teach Surah Al-Mulk to your children, your spouse, and your parents. Whoever teaches the Quran receives the reward of everyone who recites it. This is one of the greatest forms of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah): knowledge that continues to benefit others after you. The Laylatul Qadr virtues remind us that a single night of worship can outweigh a thousand months; likewise, a single surah taught to a child can bring reward for a lifetime.
The Rewards of Reciting the Quran
The virtues of Surah Al-Mulk are part of the greater reward of reciting the Holy Quran. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward, and the reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Mim is a letter.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2910). Every letter of Surah Al-Mulk therefore brings ten rewards, and the surah has hundreds of letters. The one who recites it nightly earns thousands of rewards in a few minutes.
The Quran is also a source of healing and mercy. Allah says: “And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.” (Al-Isra 17:82). The believer who turns to the Quran in hardship finds comfort, and the believer who turns to it in ease finds guidance. Surah Al-Mulk, with its reminder of Allah’s sovereignty and His forgiveness, is among the most comforting chapters for the heart that fears the grave and hopes for the mercy of Allah. The etiquette of making dua teaches us to ask Allah with humility and hope, and the best time to ask is after reciting His words. So end your recitation of Surah Al-Mulk with dua: ask Allah for forgiveness, for protection from the punishment of the grave, and for a good ending.
